Senior Harriers Weekly Update w/c 10th August

We start the week at York Millennium Bridge 5k on a warm Wednesday evening.Paul Cook along with second claim runners Sharon Barlow and Nathan Smith took to the twisty but quick course.In a strong ladies field, Sharon Barlow blew away all female competitors and smashed her PB in the process in a speedy 17:07 for 24th place. Paul Cook was next home finishing in 17:46 for 43rd, and Nathan Smith in 63rd in 18:40.

On Saturday at Darlington parkrun the Harriers were out in force again despite Sunday being full of 10k races.317 runners enjoyed the sunshine no more so than Nathan Hemingbrough who led the way finishing 6th in 18:10 5 seconds off his PB.Paul Cook, playing sub 20 minute pace maker was next home in 19:49 taking David Aitken, 17th, with him for a massive PB.David took off 61 seconds from his personal best to finish in a superb 19:53.Well done David!David McKenna was next home for the club in 23rd in 20:24 with Dom Colley in 27th for 20:40.Graham Garvey finished 30th in 20:59 with Mark Robinson 9 seconds outside his PB in 33rd place in a time of 21:04.Junior, Lucy-Erin Hunter running for the first time finished 34th in 21:09 with Sean Connolly equally her time one place behind.Juris Silvos finished in 21:37 for 43rd place with junior Sam Talman having a good run to finish in 21:40. Uncle Andrew Park and Barry Talman finished 47th and 48th in 21:41 with Andrew Glencross having another good run to finish just outside is PB in 21:47.Jade Hutchinson was next home in 66th in a time of 22:37 with Peter Armstrong pacing 23minutes finished in 79th in 23:10.with Lesley Miller and Emily Halstead follow shortly behind in 83rd and 86th position in times of 23:20 and 23:28.Emma Morley finished 94th in 23:43 with Shirley Gibson finishing in 103rd for 24:24.Anne Hutchinson had a very good day in the office achieving another PB; marathon training is going very well! Anne finished 121st in 25:21 with Linda Tinkler following suit finishing in 140th for a new PB of 26:19.Well done ladies!Brian Burdon was next to finish in 29:29 followed by Kate Bower in 29:37 in 230th.Stephen Dauber finished 242nd in 30:35 with Tai Charlton tail running to ensure everyone made it round safely.

Great to see Harriers supporting the parkrun even with races the following day.

Heather Mochrie, clearly fresh from her marathon win last week thought she would have a go at the 29mile Hardmoors marathon over in Saltburn…. as you do…… this week.Heather once again finished 1st lady and 9th overall.Heather was quoted as saying that her win was down to “Pizza the night before the race for tea”.Heather….you are a true Athlete!! Heather a very experienced long distance runner not only can undertake these challenges on a frequent basis but also has the ability to talk under water.Ultra-talented.

On Sunday morning over at Scorton, David McKenna took on the 10k trail race.At this time results have not been released but David finished 14th overall.On Sunday morning in Northumberland Peter Armstrong ran a trail Half Marathon in preparation for the Great North Run.In a field of 65 runners Peter finished in 5th place in a time of 1hr 42. Well done Peter that’s great work

Over in Billingham at the Ray Harrison 10k, the sun not only got his hat on but slapped on the Factor 50 just to be sure. In a field of 222 runners Colin Taylor finished first for the club in 37:28 for 23rd place followed by Paul Helliwell in 27th in 37:54 and Paul Cook in 38:03 for 29th.Andrew Park improved on his PB at Darlington to go even faster finishing in a speedy 39:35 for 43rd place, well done Andy.Jeff Miller had another strong run finishing 49th in 40:23with Sue Phillips finishing 56th in a solid 41:19.Louise Talman running with husband Barry finished 60th and 61st in 41:29 and 41:30.Paul Keedy was next home beating his course record quite comfortably in 69th position in a time of 43:10.Linda Noble was next home in 80th position in 44:14 with brother in law Martin Phillips finishing 83rd in 44:28.

Clare Park just missed the top 100 finishing 101st in 46:16 with Clive Green 105th in 46:38.Peter Foulds took a chunk of his PB by finishing in 47:00.Jade Hutchinson was next home finishing 109th in 47:11 with Charlotte Knowles finishing 127th in 49:07.Anne Hutchinson broke her PB by finishing in 160th place in a time of 52:27 with team mate Shirley Gibson 1 place behind and 1 second. Ian Barnes finished 177th in 54:48, showing unbelievable ability at the sprightly age of 80. Great running all.

To finish the week, we head back down to York where Mark Tallon chased the allusive sub 60second 400m.Again Mark ran his heart out in the heat but again just missed out finishing in 61.2 seconds.Tremendous effort, the Holy Grail of 400m running will be yours soon Mark.

Walter (Wally) Lawson

Sad news came to light this weekend when we heard that Wally Lawson had sadly passed away.Wally was a coach at the Darlington Harriers for 26 years since the 1970s where his daughters Jan and Fiona ran for the club.Reading comments from those who knew him or were coached by him highlight what a sad loss this is to his family and friends.Thoughts are with his family.
